The London Ambulance Service delivers round-the-clock care to the residents of London, while maintaining close collaboration with partner agencies.
We offer a wide range of opportunities for anyone who is interested in working on the frontline of the capital’s ambulance service.
The staff working on our emergency ambulances include Paramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians. They respond to a wide variety of calls but mainly to serious or life-threatening calls.
We have also created a new role in our Service, called Assistant Ambulance Practitioner (AAP). This role fits in our career structure to mean a member of staff can start in our Non-Emergency Transport Service (NETS), become an AAP and eventually, should they wish, progress to other clinical roles including paramedic positions.
The London Ambulance Service deploys Rapid Response Vehicle (RRV) crews from the majority of its stations across London. These units are staffed by highly experienced senior paramedics who are qualified to operate independently as solo responders. Each RRV is equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology and forms part of a specialised fleet, ensuring the rapid delivery of advanced pre-hospital care to patients in critical need."
The London Ambulance Service maintains two dedicated specialist teams—Urgent Care and Critical Care—each providing tailored clinical support to meet varying levels of patient need
What do our Urgent care team do ? The Urgent Care Team, staffed exclusively by Advanced Paramedics, focuses on managing patients within the community to avoid unnecessary hospital conveyance. They are trained to perform advanced procedures including wound closure, comprehensive assessments, and enhanced clinical observations
What do our Critical care team do ? The Critical Care Team is staffed exclusively by Advanced Paramedics in Critical Care and serves as a key component of the London Major Trauma Network. Working in close partnership with the London Air Ambulance, the team provides advanced pre-hospital care at the roadside to patients with life-threatening injuries or medical emergencies
(IROs) are experienced paramedics who provide on-scene leadership and clinical oversight at complex or large-scale incidents. They play a vital role in coordinating ambulance resources, supporting crews, and ensuring the effective delivery of care during high-pressure situations. IROs are also trained to liaise with other emergency services and contribute to strategic decision-making during major or multi-agency incidents
The London Ambulance Service operates four HART (Hazardous Area Response Team) units strategically deployed across London to provide specialized skills and support to both the LAS and partner agencies. These teams are specially trained and equipped to respond to high-risk and complex emergencies that fall beyond the scope of standard ambulance crews.
HART personnel possess a wide range of advanced capabilities, including working safely in hazardous environments, conducting water rescues, performing operations at height, and managing incidents in confined spaces. Additionally, they are trained in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear (CBRN) incident response, ensuring readiness for a diverse array of emergency scenarios.
By combining advanced clinical expertise with specialist equipment and tactical training, HART teams enhance the overall emergency response framework across London. This ensures that no matter where or what type of care is needed, the HART team can provide rapid, effective, and safe intervention.
